In this article, the latest in FOC's series covering specialty fibers and their fabrication, we discuss polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers and the various approaches used to make them. There are several PM fiber designs – all quite different and each with its own. The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a polarization-maintaining optical fiber, which comprises depositing and manufacturing a core rod and a stress rod respectively by a deposition method, melting and stretching the core rod and the quartz sleeve to form an optical fiber. How are preforms for polarization-maintaining fibers made? This article explains what a fiber preform is: the piece of optical glass from which an optical fiber is manufactured in a fiber drawing tower, and how its structure determines the fiber's properties.
