Israel's coastal optical cable network includes both operational submarine systems like JONAH and planned land and undersea projects to enhance connectivity with Europe, the Gulf, and Asia.Submarine Fiber-Optic CablesOne of the key operational submarine cables is JONAH, a 2,300 km fiber-optic system connecting Tel Aviv, Israel, to Bari, Italy, and extending into Europe via GTT's pan-European network. The system has two fiber pairs capable of delivering 10G, 40G, and 100G wavelengths, with a total capacity exceeding 7 Tbps. JONAH is owned and operated by Bezeq International Ltd. and was supplied by Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, entering service in January 2012 . Israel is also involved in several international submarine cable projects intended to link Europe and Asia via Israel. These include Google's Blue-Raman venture, designed to connect Europe to East Asia through Israel and the Arabian Peninsula, and the TEAS (Trans Europe Asia System), which aims to connect Marseille to Mumbai via Israel and Saudi Arabia. These projects are strategically important for positioning Israel as a regional data hub, but they have faced delays due to geopolitical, environmental, and logistical challenges .Land-Based Fiber-Optic InitiativesIn addition to submarine cables, Israel is constructing a land-based multi-optic-fiber cable between Ashkelon on the Mediterranean coast and Eilat on the Red Sea, spanning 254 km.
