Circuit of Fiber Optic Sensor

A basic fiber optic sensor circuit consists of a light source, optical fiber, sensing element (transducer), optical detector, and an electronic processing unit.Components of the Basic CircuitLight Source: Typically a laser diode, LED, or other coherent light source that injects light into the optical fiber. The light serves as the carrier signal for sensing information .Optical Fiber: Acts as the transmission medium. In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself is affected by the measurand (e.g., strain, temperature), while in extrinsic sensors, the fiber simply guides light to and from an external sensing element .Sensing Element (Transducer): Converts the physical quantity (such as pressure, temperature, or vibration) into a modulation of the light signal. This modulation can affect intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization of the light .Optical Detector: Receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal. Common detectors include photodiodes or phototransistors, which respond to changes in light intensity or other optical properties .Electronic Processing Unit: Processes the electrical signal from the detector. This may include amplifiers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, or digital signal processors to interpret the sensor data and provide a readable output .Working PrincipleThe light source emits light into the optical fiber. The sensing element interacts with the light, causing changes in its properties according to the physical quantity being measured. The optical detector captures the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal. The electronic processing unit analyzes the signal to quantify the measured parameter, providing real-time monitoring or control feedback .Block Diagram OverviewThe basic circuit can be visualized as: Light Source → Optical Fiber → Sensing Element → Optical Fiber → Detector → Electronic Processing UnitIn intrinsic sensors, the sensing occurs within the fiber itself, so the fiber is both the transmission medium and the sensing element. In extrinsic sensors, the fiber only transmits light to an external transducer, which modulates the light before it returns to the detector . This configuration allows fiber optic sensors to operate in environments with high electromagnetic interference, extreme temperatures, or hazardous conditions, making them suitable for industrial, aerospace, and structural health monitoring applications .
